Are Logo Designers Lazy?

Continuing my discussion on logo design, I believe that this raises the question, are logo designers lazy? Is there a reason that there isn’t in depth detail or is there detail hidden in plain sight? While I like detail and fun colors, I don’t think that these designers are lazy. I think there is a reason to why they go more simple with designs. Its more convenient to place on webpages, billboards, and other places. A logo might seem simple, but if you see it and go “Oh yeah, that’s insert brand here”, it has done its job.

Can Minimalist Logos Work?

As much as I dislike basic and plain logos, I will say that some can be very impactful. Logos like Airbnb, Apple, Uber, and Nike prove that they can make a simple, yet recognizable logo that works perfectly for that brand.

Mountain Dewing It Up With New Logo!

Last time on the blog of Chap, I discussed how McDonalds went from happy place to gray minimalist bore. Now, I would like to discuss an upgrade from a basic logo. Mountain Dew had more of a jagged and pointed logo that came off aggressive. It was marketed towards teens who wanted to get that big time sugar rush. It seems that it has gone back to its moonshining roots and seems more chill and nature forward. To me, this is proof that going against the grain and breaking trends can help stand out.

Minimalism? More Like New Boring Logo Trend!

Close your eyes and picture this, you are going to McDonald’s to redeem a coupon for a free burger for meeting some goal at school. You walk into the bright red and yellow palace with Ronald, Grimace, Hamburgler, and the rest of the gang all over the restaurant. You then see the big play place and quickly kick your shoes off to go in and play. It was so fun and nostalgic, but now a days, its boring and grey. McDonald’s is a victim of minimalism. Logos that are minimalized can lose their character and how they identify them.

Most logos while seeming boring, are done to make their lives easier and sometimes it can work in their favor because you build that association to the logo and it becomes that identity.

While some of the rebrands make sense, others transitioned to a lifeless husk of themselves.

AI is Ruining My Life! Do I Need to Change Careers?

Imagine spending 2 years of your life stressing over getting a 4.0 GPA at school, building a good portfolio, typing out this blog for your lab assignment, just for the owner of a business to be like, “Why should I hire you? AI can do your job quicker and I don’t have to pay Adobe as much. Plus, ChatGPT is free.” Now, before we grab our knees and rock back and forth like a crazy person, I still believe that there is a place for graphic designers for this world we live in.

The reason there is a place for us is very simple. There is a level of problem solving and design concepts that AI doesn’t have a grasp on yet. While it can generate a background that looks very convincing like the real thing, it can also fail to understand the design concepts that we are taught. We have an idea of why things should be round or square? Why red might be too aggressive and blue might be a better option? Most people that also use AI, won’t know how to create a good prompt for the AI, leading to iffy results.

While AI is progressing at a scary rate, I think that designs with a human touch will be in higher demand over AI generated photos.

Don’t Go Chasing Waterfalls, Unless it’s in Cherokee, NC

Where

Do you need an escape from the skyscrapers of the city? If you go to western North Carolina, you may see some skyscrapers, but it is different than the ones in the city. The Appalachian Mountains are a beautiful mountain chain that runs from as far north as Maine and as far south as the tip of Georgia. Among those mountains, is a small town where the heritage of the Cherokee Tribe is honored. It is just as historical as it is beautiful https://visitcherokeenc.com

Love My AI and Give Me Money! Sincerely, Adobe

Internet challenge: Impossible! I dare you to find a piece of software or a website that isn’t either developing an AI model or already has one available. Most things now-a-days are using AI in some form or fashion. It is a hot topic of debate and will be sure to generate engagement (please engage with this post I used the buzzword!). One platform that uses it is Adobe. They use image generation to help make your life easier. Adobe wants you to use this in the worst way possible. Why is that?

AI is the popular thing that people of all ages enjoy playing with and Adobe wants a piece of that pie. Adobe has changed its business model from paying one lump sum of money from their software, to using a subscription model where you pay monthly for their service. As you use AI, it can create stagnation and make it a crutch. If you quit using your creative muscles, you eventually lose them. Think of them like your arms. If you quit bench pressing, they won’t be as strong. Adobe wants you to lean on their tools to make sure they get their rent money which has proven to be a very lucrative business model.

Adobe AI is Here to Save the Day!

“Create an image for this blog post talking about how good AI is for image generation” Now what will this create? I am not sure but Adobe AI will come up with something in less than a minute while I will sit and brainstorm this concept for a while and then have to actually create it. Time is money and AI is here to help you maximize your minutes.

Want to level the playing field for designers that have more experience than you? AI can do that! AI can make adjustments to designs that look professional and use templates to make it where anyone can make something that looks good. AI is also good at removing unwanted elements for you while keeping the integrity of the work. This helps improve the smoothness of your workflow and give you more time to focus on your creative design (AI can help with that too!). It will even remember you style so the more you use it, the better suggestions overtime. Play around with it and see what you can create and how easy it will be!
